As autumn’s crisp embrace descends upon the Harrison River Valley, so does the return of a natural phenomenon: the Season of the Wild! While forests get painted in fall’s rich jewel tones, the waterways come alive with frenzied activity. It’s the time of year when salmon return to spawn, and thus, end their lifecycle. Drawn by the promise of a delicious fish feast, bald eagles congregate by the thousands, resulting in a majestic flurry of expansive wings, sharp talons and zealous salmon splashes. Meanwhile, in the untold depths of the Harrison and Fraser Rivers, the white sturgeon – ancient giants of the deep – silently glide in search of food. The Season of the Wild celebrates all of these magnificent creatures: the bald eagles, salmon, and white sturgeon. This astonishing natural occurrence takes place from October to January.

Wander the Eagle Interpretive Trail at Sandpiper Resort to see a convocation of the majestic Bald Eagles feeding on salmon in the Harrison River from the gazebo viewpoint. If you’re looking to get out on the water, take a River Cruise with Shoreline Tours or the Bald Eagle Viewing Boat Tour with Harrison Eco Tours.

Did you know that the Harrison River is the first designated Salmon Stronghold in Canada? A “Salmon Stronghold” means that all 5 species of salmon live and spawn in our waterways. Some prime salmon viewing locations include Weaver Creek and the Weaver Creek Spawning Channel, Eagle Interpretive Trail at Sandpiper, and the Sts’ailes Heritage Trail.

The white sturgeon looks much the same as it did back in prehistoric days, with large bone plates instead of scales, lending them a dinosaur-like appearance. They are considered to be one of the most spectacular freshwater fish, having a reputation for their size, strength, and impressive jumps. Guided fishing tours are available with BC Sportfishing Group, Fraser River Lodge, Kilby Lodge and Champ Sportfishing Charters.
The abundance of salmon and healthy biodiversity in the region attracts a spectacular array of animals. You may even spot coyotes, bears, river otters, seals, and other wildlife – it’s a wondrous time of year for wildlife viewing. We hope we’ve inspired you to grab your camera, binoculars, and sense of wonder, and head to the Harrison River Valley during the Season of the Wild!
